Greetings from our family to yours and Welcome to another TrailMagick89 missive,
This is part one of a five part series about the term “denomination”. Well, you know we could tear apart the belief of each denomination, or we could look at what the word “denomination” actually means, and where it came from and then we can take a look if one’s denomination defines what a Christian is; remember from our earlier post on the first that basically states what a Christian is.
Here is a passage to think about as you read through this series, John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. This verse sums up the rest of this discussion of Christian denominations.
Throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Scriptures names that are used to call us followers of Jesus that do not use the word “Christian” are as follows; Child of Abraham, Seed of Abraham, Believers, the Promise, Children of the Free Woman, Chosen People, Followers of the Way, Holy People, the Flock, the Church Body, the Bride, Living Stones, Royal Priesthood, the Saints, Fellow Labourers, Fellow Soldiers, Kingdom of Priests, the New Covenant, the First Fruits, Bride of the Lamb, the Salt of the Earth, the Light, the Chosen, the Elect, strangers, scattered tribes, witnesses, disciples, Nazarenes, and the list goes on and on. We are the Christian denomination.
Denomination: as defined by Webster’s New World Pocket Dictionary of 2000 is; a noun: 1) a name, 2) specific class or kind, 3) specific religious group. The original word for denomination first appeared in the late fourteen century. And referred to the local church body. Now we can take that and look just at the New Testament to find out what is said about denominations. And all the Scriptural references are from the King James Version of the Bible. The first reference we are going to look at is in the Acts of the Apostles chapter eleven verse twenty six (Acts 11:26), which actually the statement starts in verse twenty two and goes through verse twenty six (v. 22-26): Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. *Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. *For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. *Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: *And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
