Greetings from our family to yours and Welcome to another TrailMagick89 missive,

Welcome to “A Plan of a Plan of a Plan in Stages”. I sat here today chatting with Sweets about the title of this missive and all of the posts in this series and the outline that goes with this missive is the beginning of what can only be termed as “An Encyclopedia of Elroy’s Thoughts for Following Your Own Trail”. It is a working title; however it does sum up what we are undertaking.

This is part one of a multi-stage series on Planning, Prepping, Strategizing, and Executing our plan to take on backpacking, bikepacking, and canoeing trips. This year we are planning on backpacking the Michigan Shore to Shore Trail as many of you may know, as well as moving towards a much larger goal of taking on the North Country National Scenic Trail in 2020 and 2021. Originally we were going to tackle the North Country Trail as a ‘Thru-Hike’, since looking at what we need to do we have decided to take on the NCT as a section hike to be completed in 2020 and 2021.

The way we are doing the NCT is by going to the Eastern trail head in Vermont and backpacking from there back towards Michigan. We will spend roughly three to six weeks on the trail and come back home for seven to ten days and then return to the trail to take on another section. As we do each of the sections; our goal is to complete each of the smaller trails that make up the NCT.

We will complete trails such as the Long Trail, the Finger Lakes Trails, and the Buckeye Trail, along with numerous other trails. Our intent is to complete each of the smaller trails in their entirety, thus adding each of these trails to our ever growing list of short, medium, and long distance trails. By the end of the section hike of the North Country Trail we will have knocked out another fifty or so smaller trails.

I want to make it clear: “We, Elroy & Sweets of TrailMagick89.com, are not professionals in this sort of endeavor. We are planning a few trips and we are using the internet and books, along with the personal knowledge from people whether in person or on the internet. The endeavor I spoke of earlier I was and am referring to planning section hikes, thru-hikes, and cycling trips.” That being said let us begin.

We have spent the last few weeks planning and the last few months talking about the steps for planning a thru hike and which thru hike we wanted to undertake. It turns out that making an outline of the process is the best course of action. And with each part of the outline we are going to weigh the pros and cons.

As the days and months continue the outline will continue to be edited. The steps of the plan go something as follows and will change; Step One: The General Plan (in five stages), Step Two: The Five Stages, and Step Three: The Details of the Five Stages.
